I just don't.

I don't understand it when authors or anyone else apologizes for killing a character.
If it had to happen and served the needs of the story, then there's no reason to apologize.
If anything, the apology makes it sound like the death was a mistake.
If it was, fine.
If it wasn't, and you're doing it because people got sad or mad or angry on the internet, not so fine.

(That's not to say that you can't feel bad about killing a character.
You can.
You just don't need to apologize for doing it.)
